The Manufacturing Advancement Center held its 9 th annual Manufacturing Our Future Summit on Thursday, October 6, 2005 at Worcester’s DCU Center.
A welcome by Stephen Willand, Ph.D., Director of the Central Massachusetts Regional Employment Board, began the awards ceremony presentation for the Milton P. Higgins Awards of Excellence. Winners were selected based on an essay contest with each entrant describing two areas of importance in vocational education and their future. Essays were judged by a committee of business and community leaders.
Video addresses by Congressman James P. McGovern and Senator Hilary Clinton spoke of the importance of education in the workforce of the future and the importance of manufacturing to the US economy.
Winners of the awards were presented their scholarship and medal of excellence by Edwin B. “Ted” Coghlin and Gladys Rodriques-Parker, representing Congressman McGovern’s office.
Two informational sessions provided an overview of career opportunities within the fields of Life Sciences and Manufacturing. Ranch Kimball, Secretary of Economic Development, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, spoke at the Manufacturing Session where he outlined the importance of manufacturing to the Commonwealth and our future.
Students received background information to be used as a basis for consideration in their future careers. Discussion included how the skills they are learning at vocational schools will impact their future.
The workforce of tomorrow is being trained today!
